Border screening of Mexican film ‘La Cocina’ set for Laredo – KGNS

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – A compelling new film about dreams and struggles across the U.S.-Mexico border will be screened in Laredo.

Special border review of La Cocinadirected by Mexican filmmaker Alonso Ruizpalácios, will take place on Wednesday, October 30, at Laredo College’s Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center Theater on West End Washington Street. The screening, starting at 6:00 p.m., is part of the pre-release event before the film’s national premiere.

The Daphne Art Foundation and Grupo Alexander are hosting the screening with the support of US distributor WILLA. Following the film, a bilingual panel will feature actress Ana Diaz, local attorney Sister Rosemary Welsh, and chef Christina Martinez, known for her South Philly restaurant, Barbacoa.

Director Ruiplasios shared his inspiration for La Cocinaexplaining, “I’ve always wanted to tell a story about what happens after crossing the border. Migrant films are almost a genre in Mexico, but few focus on what happens on the other side. What makes this narrative compelling is whether the dream is realized or shattered. The stories I came across in my research were both beautiful and heartbreaking and reflect the cost of chasing that dream.”

La Cocina follows Pedro, an undocumented chef (played by Raúl Briones) working in a bustling New York restaurant. When the money goes missing, suspicion falls on Pedro. His relationship with Julia, an American waitress (played by Rooney Mara), brings added tension as Pedro is faced with a difficult choice that could change his life.

The screening is free to the public. You can get tickets here.
