The current Boise State Broncos team is the best fans have seen since the golden days of Chris Petersen and Kellen Moore — at least according to the latest Associated Press College Football Top 25 rankings.
The Broncos (7-1, 3-0 Mountain West) were ranked No. 12 in the AP poll for Week 11. This is Boise State’s highest ranking in the poll since it was ranked No. 10 in Week 12 of the 2011 season. This season, the Broncos went 12-1, won the Las Vegas Bowl over Arizona State and finished the season ranked No. 8.
Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore finished 8th in Heisman Trophy voting this season. Of course, the Broncos have their own Heisman Trophy hopeful this season as well, junior Ashton Jeanty.
Jeanty had to contend with another defense doing their best to stop him against San Diego State on Friday night. The Aztecs stacked the box against Jeanty in Boise State’s 56-24 win, but that didn’t stop Jeanty from totaling 180 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Boise State’s blowout win — in which the Aztecs scored 14 fourth-quarter points against reserves — helped the Broncos jump from No. 15 to No. 12 in the poll.
Several teams ranked above the Broncos in last week’s AP poll lost. Clemson and Iowa State, which were tied for No. 11, both lost to unranked opponents, as did then-No. 10 Texas A&M.
Boise State collected 853 points in the poll, ranking behind No. 11 Alabama (867 points) and ahead of No. 13 SMU (752 points).
The Broncos are also the top-ranked team in the Group of Five, which bodes well ahead of Tuesday’s first College Football Playoff rankings. The top-ranked team from a G5 conference in the CFP committee’s rankings — Mountain West, AAC, Conference USA, MAC and Sun Belt — is guaranteed a berth in this year’s expanded CFP.
The only G5 team in the AP poll is AAC No. 18 Army. Washington State, whose only loss came to Boise State, is ranked No. 20. The Cougars are technically still one of two teams in the Pac-12, but play a Mountain West schedule until the new Pac-12 is formed in July 2026.
Boise State will also have a chance to make a big jump in the poll next week. Fox announced that the Broncos’ game against Nevada will air Saturday in the network’s evening primetime slot. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. MST next Saturday.
The Broncos also made a nice jump in the coaches poll, which tended to have Boise State ranked slightly lower than its AP counterpart. The Broncos jumped from No. 19 to No. 14, amassing 615 points, coming in behind No. 13 LSU (653 points) and ahead of No. 15 SMU (603 points).
Like the AP poll, the only other ranked teams from the G5 are Army, ranked No. 19, and the Pac-12’s Washington State, ranked No. 20.
