Boardwalk can be a solution to deal with erosion near White Rock Lake Trail – NBC DFW

A 20-foot pedestrian walkway over part of the White Rock Lake can facilitate the flow of motorcyclists and runners along a busy path in east Dallas while dealing with current erosion problems.

This is a potential Dallas Park solution and the recreation department staff can see along the path near Garland Road between the overflow and East Lawther Road.

The idea was presented on Monday at the Committee on Parks, Trails and Environment of the Municipal Council as part of an update to the Lake White Rock Lake.

Consultants with Dunaway Associates have presented details of more than 18 months of public contribution to various improvements to the amenities around White Rock Lake.

Brad Moulton told the commission members during public feedback sessions in 2023 and 2024 that there was a significant interest in solutions to improve the experience of the path near Garland Road.

Two issues of individual questions were approached in the area. The first is the safety and proximity of the path to the Garland road.

The park department put temporary blocking water barriers in the beginning of 2024, after the accidents in the previous year caused two vehicles, including a truck for fire in Dallas, to leave the roadway and cross the path.

No pedestrians were injured in any crash.

The second issue along the path deals with the ongoing erosion along the shores of the lake.

Dallas Park and Recreation Director John Jenkins said that the integrity and safety of the path were not questionable, but that in the long run a solution should be found to attack erosion along the path.

On Monday, the possibility of creating a board for this part of the path was discussed as a possible solution.

“Departure from the coastline and the creation of a pedestrian road, or some element that removes you from Garland Road,” Moulton told the committee.

Boardwalk’s transformation, presented on Monday, included a 20 -foot -wide pedestrian walkway with two picturesque views, an increase from the current 12 -foot path.

“This would be an element of the signature of the lake to solve the problems with the circulation, but it will also provide an element of convenience,” Moulton said.

Paula Blackmon Board member, whose district 9 includes White Rock Lake, told NBC 5 that the idea of ​​Boardwalk would be a viable option if the funding is identified as it has already gone through public contribution and will be part of the main plan of White Rock Lake.

“Let’s take this opportunity. Go looking for some money from grants because I think it would be absolutely fabulous to be able to walk on the water, “Blackmon said. “The prospect of water is completely different from the shores.”

Blackmon added that the Boardwalk concept will be a lower price solution, another option that includes driving blocked metal sheets in the ground near the coastline to create an erosion barrier.

The Dallas City Council is expected to vote to approve the White Rock Lake Master Plan update on February 26, with the Dallas recreation Council and the recreation board will follow on March 6th.
