Bishop Manogue wins thriller over Reno to claim regional volleyball championship – Reno Gazette Journal

Updates with late results

A regional championship deserves a dramatic finish, and the Class 5A-North volleyball final was accomplished.

Bishop Manogue topped top-seeded Reno 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 18-25, 18-16) to reclaim the Class 5A-North volleyball crown Saturday in Reno before a boisterous, enthusiastic crowd. Manogue last won the Regional title in 2021, defeating Reno 3-2 that year, also as the No. 2 seed.

Bishop Manogue coach Sophia McHugh said she was breaking the game down into small battles to help her team not get too caught up in the excitement as the drama grew

She said any break between sets is a chance for the players to refocus. Before the fifth set, she broke it down into small steps.

“I told them the next (fifth) set is 15 little battles,” she said. :And we just have to take it one at a time.”

She likes her team to keep the energy level high at all times, saying the players use that to play hard.

“I prefer it when they’re crazy and pumped up and doing all kinds of things,” she said.

Manogue beat Reno 3-2 in September, then the Huskies beat the Miners 3-1 two weeks ago.

McHugh said she changed her lineup shortly after that loss in Reno.

“Honestly, it’s anyone’s game when it’s this battle between Manogh and Renault,” she said. “They (Renault) are super talented. So whether one thing is for you or not, today a lot of the pieces that we’ve been working on just came together.”

The Class 5A state semifinals are set for Friday at 5 p.m. in Spanish Springs for Bishop Manogue vs. Coronado, and Friday at 7 p.m. Reno plays Bishop Gorman, also in Spanish Springs. The state championship is at 10 a.m. Saturday in Spanish Springs.

McHugh said he always cheers for Northern Nevada teams at state, no matter who is playing.

“I would love it if one of us representing the north won state,” she said.

Rino coach Kuna Nakagawa said that in a game as tight as Saturday’s, all the little details add up.

“When both teams are as talented as they are, the little things become bigger,” he said. “All the little details become more important when you play games like this.”

Danica Sullivan led the Huskies with 13 kills and Peyton Finley added nine kills, five aces and 19 digs, Lily Houston had six total blocks. Morgan Brenner had 24 assists.
