BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – City councilors on Tuesday approved $4.5 million in funding to help with improvements including street surfaces, sidewalks and trails.
Crews are still working on the Birmingham Amphitheater just behind the old Carraway Hospital. The money for the improvements won’t just be used around the amphitheater, however, but around the entire old Carraway property.
Councilor Hunter Williams believes this work is absolutely necessary.
“Anyone who’s been through the Carraway area or what used to be the Carraway area will know and understand the need for infrastructure investment in that area if they’ve escaped without a flat tire,” says Williams.
The project is not tied to the other $12 million in economic development incentives the city has given the developers, and city councilors say the improvements will only take place on city property.
“This is the real city property. These are the sidewalks, streets and lighting. No money is spent on private property.”
Councilman Williams says he hopes to have the project announced next year, and that time is of the essence as work on the amphitheater is due to be completed next summer.
