Birmingham’s torrid start continued as the Sky Bet League One leaders beat Bolton 2-0 at St Andrew’s@Knighthead Park.

Tomoki Iwata’s third-minute volley put them on course for their ninth win in 11 games this season before Jay Stansfield’s 83rd-minute penalty sealed it.

Iwata scored with a gentle effort from the side after former City man Josh Dacres-Cogley headed home Alfie May’s cross.

The Blues lost midfielder Emil Hanson to injury after a late challenge from Kyle Dempsey led to the Bolton striker’s yellow card.

May was denied twice, first from offside after netting and then just after half-time.

He rounded Luke Southwood but the keeper pulled the ball back and Willem Willemsson’s subsequent strike was blocked by Jay Matete.

Southwood denied the Blues when he deflected Ethan Laird’s header from Iwata’s cross before Keshi Anderson’s shot was deflected wide.

Bolton were denied a late equalizer when John McAtee’s clear shot fell at the feet of goalkeeper Ryan Allsopp.

The Blues sealed victory when Stansfield fired over from the spot after Anderson was fouled by Will Forrester.
