BATON ROUGE — The sanctuary of the University United Methodist Church was full Sunday afternoon during a charity fundraiser for the Episcopal Church of St. Luca, which burned down in February.
“Among things that are different, among different traditions, there is a lot of unity. We come together to help each other, to support each other. In that regard, our denominational differences are real, but they do not define everything about us, we are all God’s children and our unity is greater than the things that can divide us,” said St. Luke’s Rector Father Brian Owen.
The concert, titled “Surely God Saves Me,” was organized by the Greater Baton Rouge Interfaith Federation for music and scripture readings. Children’s and youth choirs from various congregations were featured, as well as piano and organ music.
“The way music touches the heart and soul, I think people will walk away from that feeling uplifted and encouraged,” Father Owen said.
A video titled “From the Ashes, the Journey of St. Luke,” describing the church and its community in the months following the fire.
Donations were also collected for the restoration of St. Luka.
“For me, the most exciting part of this is just bringing people together in the community, in different churches,” said Fr. Owen said.
