Bedford Boro Council announces St. Paul’s Start Date – Bedford Borough Board

The Bedford Borough Council should begin renovation of St. Paul’s Square, a key project within its plans for the regeneration of the City Fund. This is part of the investment of 4.98 million British pounds to improve Harpur Square and St. Paul Square. The reconstruction will create a more lively and attractive destination, strengthen the economy of the center of the center and improve the experience of visitors.

The work is scheduled in phases starting on Monday, February 17th, and is expected to be completed in early December 2025. While some delays for traffic is possible, the Council is committed to minimizing the interruption and securing the project through the project through every stage of the work. Plans involve the use of partial closure of the path where possible to reduce the interruption.

Access to pedestrians to business will be maintained all the time. Access to the protective shelter for cycles at the Center of Harpur will also be maintained during work.

Advisor Andrea Spice, the holder of a portfolio for economic growth, planning and prosperity at Bedford Boro Council, said; “We are glad to move forward with the renovation of St. Paul’s Square, this project is a vital part of our vision for the center of Bedford, creating a more welcoming space to enjoy everyone.”

St. Paul’s Improvement Project involves the replacement of pavements and curbs, along with the expansion of pedestrian paths around the south side of the square. The project will create a more attractive space for outdoor events and will improve the pedestrian flow, better connecting the cultural neighborhood, Riverside Bedford, Silver Square and High Street.

The compound of the embankment will be closed overnight, 8:00 pm, from Sunday, April 6 to Wednesday, May 7, 2025. It is to do work to allow traffic to turn right to the embankment from the city Bridge. A deviation will deviate during closure.

The new right turn in the embankment will open until the start of school summer vacations. During these holidays, St. Paul’s Square will be closed to the movement between the embankment and the Horne Lane to allow drainage and other main work. There will be a route for deviation and bus services approaching the center of Bedford from the south will be diverted, although the bus stops outside the corn exchange will not be affected. Pedestrian access will not be affected during this stage of work.

The Bedford Borough Council will work with the business, providing access to summer closure. There will be changes in the layout of some markets and they will be signed on the spot and through social media.

This phase of work must be completed by the end of August. Repeating the southern side of St. Paul Square will be permanently reduced to one lane. This will create more space and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

After the work is completed, the traffic coming south of St. Paul’s Square will have access to the bays of the market collection against the exchange of corn, the Mace Yard Parking Bay Parking.

The project has already seen the transformation into Harpur Square. The restoration and removal of the plinths have created a larger, more flexible public space for events and activities in the community, such as Christmas lights. This improved the area for future events, with increased lighting, access to utilities and flagship for community celebrations.

Bedford’s advice Boro admits that these works will sometimes affect access to the old town hall, but the ceremonies will still be able to move forward. The advice understands that those with existing ceremony reservations will have concerns and will contact them directly in the next few weeks.

In the construction of these projects, public engagement events are held in various places and times in the center of Bedford. The Council teams were able to talk to people, discuss plans and listen to feedback.
