St. Louis, Mo. – Bear Beats is a weekly edition that will be published on Mondays to provide a look at the past week’s action and preview the upcoming week’s events. The 12th edition will feature men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and men’s and men’s and women’s tennis.
Looking in the Rearview Mirror (January 20-26 events):
No. 11 Men’s Basketball
- The Bears traveled to Rochester and Emory over the weekend for their first UAA road contests of the season.
- Washu opened with a 99-82 win over Ur on Friday night.

- The Bears were led by Sr Hayden Doyle With 26 points, six rebounds and five assists per game.
- Junior Will Grudzinski Put up 20 points on 6-for-8 shooting from 3-point range and freshman year Connor May Netted 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
- Senior Drake Kidswater scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
- The Yellowjackets couldn’t overcome their first half deficit to the Bears as the visitors got the win.
- On Sunday, Washoe had their biggest challenge yet this season when they played #2 Emory on their home court, claiming the win 81-63.

- First year Connor May scored a career-high 21 points and had a career-high 13 rebounds for his first career double-double as a Bear.
- Senior Hayden Doyle Netted 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds and Jr Yogi Oliff scored 10 points.
- Both teams used significant runs in the first half to take the lead with the Bears leading by three at the break.
- The Bears continued to hang onto a slim lead for much of the second half, but the tide really began to turn with just over five minutes to go.
- The Bears again used runs to outdo themselves, leading by as many as 23 before settling for an 18-point win over the Eagles.
RV Women’s Basketball
- Vashu hit the road for his first UAA races away from the field house over the weekend at Rochester and Emory.
- The Bears opened with an 86-76 win over the Yellowjackets on Friday night.

- Sophomore Lexi Harris He led all scorers with 21 points. She added 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
- Graduated Jessica Brooks Also reached the 20-point mark while adding five rebounds.
- Sophomore Catherine Goodwin reached double figures with 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
- Both teams used a high-scoring offense in the first quarter, with the Bears jumping out to a 39-27 lead after the first 10 minutes.
- The scoring trailed off with the teams trading quarter points, with Washu finishing with the 10-point win over UR, 86-76.
- The Bears then traveled and picked up their second win of the weekend at Emory on Sunday, 67-56.

- For the second game in a row, it ended Jessica Brooks and sophomore Lexi Harris Led the Bears in scoring, this time with 19 points each.
- Brooks not only recorded her eighth double-double of the season, but her 17 rebounds set a career high.
- Two other Bears reached double figures in a statistical category. Sophomore Alyssa Hughes scored 14 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
- Junior Nailah McBeth Recorded 16 career tackles, including 10 offensive boards.
- The back-and-forth game extended into the fourth quarter with the teams tied at 50-50.
- The Bears held a two-point lead with 5:10 left in the contest, 58-56.
- The Eagles would not score again until three Washu players added to the scoreboard for the 11-point victory, 67-56.
Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field
- Washu was back in action for the second weekend in a row at a meet hosted by Div. I am an opponent.
- This week the Bears were in the Bob Teel Invitational, hosting Missouri on Saturday.
- No team scores were saved at the meeting.

- Senior Ebun Opata You took second place in the long jump with a height of 5.62m. She followed that up with a triple jump victory in a new school record of 12.54m, easily edging out second place by a meter.
- Senior Yasmin Ruf Beat all competitors from all divisions to take home the victory on the 3.95m pole vault.
- Washu had a pair of runners reach the top 10 in the 800m with the senior Izzy Gorton Finishing third with a time of 2:15.03 and a sophomore Caroline Echols Finishing seventh with a time of 2:16.33.
- It was a 1, 2, 3 finish for the Bears in the senior men’s pole vault Tommaso Maiocco Taking the top height of 5.05m, setting a new PR and placing second in the Div. Iii this winter.
- Sophomore Peter Lichtenbergerwho won at EIU last weekend, came in second with a height of 4.90m. Junior George Bourdier was the third bear in the event and finished with a height of 4.60m.
- Sophomore William Frolingjunior Brandon Brazilsenior Alvin Binaghyand first year Benjamin Krueger Finished fourth in the 4×400 with a time of 3:19.94, just .24 out of third.

No. 11 Men’s Basketball
- Washu returns home this weekend for a pair of UAA contests against Brandeis and No. 6 NYU.
- The Bears and Judges will square off on Friday, January 31 at 5:30 p.m., while Vashu takes on the Temenuses at 2 p.m. On Sunday, February 2. Both games will be played in the field house.

- Brandeis is 12-4 overall and 3-2 in the UAA.
- They are led by Toby Harris’ 18.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
- Sunday will feature the Bears and 15-1 overall and 4-1 in the UAA No. 6 Purple.
- NYU is led by Tristan Kak’s 16.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
#11 Men’s and #15 Women’s Swimming and Diving
- Washu will host its final home meet of the season on Saturday, February 1 when it hosts DePauw in a dual meet.
- Events start at 1pm from Millstone Pool.

RV Women’s Basketball
- Washu returns to the field house this weekend for a pair of UAA contests against Brandeis and No. 1 NYU.
- The Bears will take on the Judges on Friday, January 31 at 7:30 p.m., before hosting the top-ranked Violets on Sunday, February 2 at 12 p.m.

- The contest against the judges on Friday will be the team’s hardy and thought rosy night.
- Brandeis enters the game with a 9-7 record overall and a 2-3 record in the UAA.
- Last weekend, the Judges split with Case Western Reserve (W, 72-60) and Carnegie Mellon (L, 74-67).
- They are led by Lulu Ohm’s 20.2 points per game and Brooke Reed’s 4.8 rebounds per contest.
- On Sunday, Washu went 16-0 overall and 5-0 at the UAA Violets.
- NYU swept both games last weekend with wins over Carnegie Mellon (91-62) and Case Western Reserve (107-31).
- The Violets are led by Natalie Bruns’ 16.0 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game.
Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field
- Washu has a short week to prepare for the Friday Night #3 Spikes at Rose-Hulman on January 31st.

- The men’s long jump starts the meet at 5:15 PM ET and the night ends with the 4×400 relay around 9:30 PM ET.
No. 6 Women’s Tennis
- Washu opens its season at the Springs on Saturday, February 1 when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind. for a neutral site matchup with Kenyon.
- First serve is scheduled for 3:15 PM ET.
- The Bears are 7-2 all-time against Kenyon and have won the last two games dating back to 2022.
No. 12 Men’s Tennis
- Spring is here, and the Bears kick off their doubleheader schedule on Saturday, Feb. 1 when they host No. 17 Wisconsin-Whitewater.
- The game will be held at the Lifetime Creve Coeur facility and will begin at 6:00 p.m.
- Washu is 12-0 all-time against the Warhawks, including a 6-3 win last season.
