BATON ROUGE — Daylight saving time ended at 2 a.m. Sunday, as the weather changes, the Baton Rouge Fire Department is reminding residents to replace smoke detector batteries.
Fire Chief Michael Kimball also encourages residents to check devices to make sure they are working properly and to have an escape plan in case of fire.
“Changing the batteries in your smoke detectors during the weather change is a simple task that can save lives,” Chief Kimball said. “If a fire breaks out in your home, having a working smoke detector can increase your chance of survival by more than 50%.”
When changing the batteries, it is important to consider the age of the device. If any smoke detector is more than 10 years old, it’s time to replace it.
