A new British comedy film about the world of ballroom dancing is in development.
The Light Fantastic is due to be filmed in Blackpool, the world’s home of the sport, early next year, according to reports.
Rupert Everett will star as the “ultra-traditional” dance instructor of 30-year-old gay firefighter Jason, played by Jeremy Irvine (The Bad Education Movie).
Starring Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits) and Strictly come to dance star Leighton Williams, will feature choreography by TV personality, dancer, talent show judge and choreographer Shirley Ballas and her son Mark, who has a similar list of professional accomplishments and talents in the US.
Inspired by a true story, The Light Fantastic follows Jason, a thirtysomething gay firefighter who dreams of becoming a professional ballroom dancer.
Set in the bustling heart of Blackpool, the ballroom capital of the world, Jason battles the strict traditions of the ballroom under the watchful eye of his ultra-traditional instructor, Reynolds. As he embarks on a journey of self-discovery, he learns to listen to his heart before he can truly dance to its beat.
Produced by Genesius Pictures, it was written by Lee Warburton and directed by Chris Cottam.
