At least eight dead in Serbian train station roof collapse – Irvine Times

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said at least four people were admitted to hospital with serious injuries, while rescuers made contact with two people still buried under piles of concrete.

“There will probably be a few more people (dead),” Mr Dacic said. “I personally saw a body that we couldn’t get to. There will be more, this number will not be final.”

Ambulances and other emergency crews were sent to Central Station and bulldozers removed the debris as people searched for survivors.

Surveillance footage showed people walking in and out of the building and sitting on benches as the concrete structure suddenly collapsed on top of them.

The building has been recently renovated.

Mr Dacic said the rescue operation was “extremely difficult” and would continue for at least a few more hours.

The government of Serbia declared November 2 a day of mourning.

Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said “this is Black Friday for us, for all of Serbia.”

Mr Vucevic said the roof was built in 1964 and an investigation is currently underway to find out what happened and who is responsible for the tragedy.

Serbia’s state railway company said the incident happened at 11:50 a.m. local time.

The company said the structure above the station entrance was not touched during the recent renovation.
