Phoenix (Azfamily) -The College of Health Decisions of the State University of Arizona is united by the Foundation for Equality Health to deal with the 14-year difference in life expectancy between South Phoenix and North Scotsdale.
The Council of the Supervisory Authorities of the Maricopa County awarded a partnership of $ 1 million to find the factors leading to the precipice and then apply strategies to close it. The partnership talks with hundreds in the community that confirmed their concerns, including a lack of quality health care and proximity to parks and food.
ASU Deborah Williams Clinical Assistant said your postcode means more than your genetic code.
“We often say that health is based on the spot or the postal code is as important as the genetic code; 60% rely on socio -economic factors, the location of the place where you live, access to good health care and your built environment. All of these help or limit the choice you make, “she explained.
Now ASU and Foundation for Equality Health are looking for ways to help people from South Phoenix.
“We are already working with health partners in the community to create these opportunities for people to receive mental, physical health and social care,” said the President of the Foundation for Equality Health Thomas Leon.
The proximity to healthy foods is also a challenge. “We know that in Southern Phoenix, unlike northern Scotsdale, it’s like three miles to a grocery store. If you rely on public transport, it can take two hours of travel to the grocery store. Where, as in northern Scotsdale, most residences are 8/10s from a mile to three grocery stores, “Williams said.
Leon said they work with several organizations, such as urban agricultural groups, to bring good food to the residents.
“They have the feeling that we are living in a food swamp, too many fast food restaurants, cheap food and we don’t have enough opportunities for fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs,” he said.
