The Matherne market returns to the Highland/Kenilworth area, nine years after selling its supermarket there to Robért Fresh Market.

A sign posted in the store window in 7355 Highland over the weekend has announced that Matherne has applied for sale of alcohol at the store under the name of Materne’s Market in Kenilworth.

Erni “Tony” Matten Jr. said Mattern is in the process of buying at the place of Kenilworth. The plan is to operate three stores in Baton Rouge. The other two places are in the city center and at Nicholson Gateway, against LSU. The supermarket also has shops in Laples and Paulina.

Matherne’s has been involved in more than 35 years and is known for its daily lunches of fried chicken and catfish, a delicacy with full service and a selection of fine wines, alcoholic and craft beers.

New Orleans -based Robert bought the Matherne’s Grocery Store in February 2016 and made extensive repairs to the property, adding a cooked area of seafood, a CC cafe, an extended bakery and an area that was selling fresh pizzas and a barbecue.

Robért has been watching the Baton Rouge market for years before opening the Kenilworth store. In 2008, the State Bond Committee approved Gozone Bond’s money to build a place on Perkins Road and Acadian Thruway. But the store has never been built and the supermarket of merchant Joe ended up on the site.

Robért, which was founded in 1994, operates five stores in New Orleans and Metairie.

This is the second local supermarket to change hands this year. In early January, Kalando sold his place to the Perkins Road to Oak Point Market. The grocery store has since been rebranded as the Oak Point market – St. George.
