The nation’s first AI film festival kicked off Wednesday in Glendale.
The inaugural three-day event from October 31 to November 2 is called AI movie 3 and the Arizona Art Festival. It shows 150 films from around the world, even some award-winning ones, at AMC Westgate. It demonstrated what is possible in film using AI, plus panel discussions at the nearby Renaissance Hotel on how different AI tools have been used.
PJ Way is the founder of the festival and says that AI is used to generate at least part of each film, whether it’s the soundtrack or the script itself. And no tool was on the table for the creators.
“Because their style can depend on the type of instrument. Although they all do similar things, they don’t do it the same way. And they actually produce different results,” Wei said.
Way says the use of AI tools can be polarizing, but the goal of this festival is to show audiences how AI can break down communication barriers in all industries, not just film.
Wei says the goal is to demystify AI tools for every use and demonstrate their potential to empower people, especially those with disabilities.
“My daughter, for example, is non-verbal and so she has a physical limitation and she’s non-verbal, but she’s still able to create things in a way that expresses ideas and expresses her own thoughts about things that would otherwise be very limited. It is not for someone to translate for her; she’s able to do it,” Wei said.
The films are categorized by themes such as horror – in honor of Halloween and there are also interactive art installations as part of the festival.
