BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WAFF) – For the third straight season, the Alabama State Hornets got the best of the Alabama A&M Bulldogs in the 83rd Magic City Classic at historic Legion Field in Birmingham on Saturday, falling 27-19.
The Hornets stung first with a fast start in the first half, leading 17-3 at the break.
The Bulldogs stayed cool through the first three quarters and committed four turnovers that led to 13 Alabama State points.
However, things changed in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs fought back, scoring 19 unanswered points, but the magic ran out in the Magic City.
“We finally got something late, we had a chance right there on third-and-long, we go off the field right there, we get the ball back for a minute, 55 seconds. The way we were moving the ball, I was confident we were going to get it down and score, go for two and it would be overtime, head coach Connell Maynor said after the game, “Hats off to them, they made the plays they had to make , and we just didn’t play very well tonight, we weren’t ready to play, and I have to take the blame for that.”
With their second SWAC East loss, Alabama A&M is now at risk of missing the postseason.
