Three of us drove over Donner Pass from Davis, CA early yesterday morning to help with GOTV in Reno. The Sierra was indeed Nevada, but there wasn’t enough snow on the road to hold back about 50 from Davis and more from Sacramento and the Bay Area. A large turnout of volunteers with great enthusiasm.
We left with two lists on our phone apps and leaflets to leave if no one was home (mostly.) One area, almost all Hispanic, small homes with tidy gardens, some very creatively decorated, which I loved. Everyone has had dogs – hooray! Of the ones I saw, at least 6 had already voted—I stopped counting—and I was hopeful but worried. One had moved and the two new residents had already voted for TFG but were not hostile. I told them that I hope everyone in the country who is eligible can also vote, and I’m glad they care.
I took a 15 year old whose mother had not yet voted and explained to him how to get her vote and left the instruction card. He said he would help and make sure!
The next area was more rural, large lots, many of them fenced off with no-holds-barred signs. A black man had voted, and we chatted a little; he was a big fan of Harris, but he was worried. He was big on the importance of voting and discussed it with friends and family.
At this point we ran into another team with almost the same roster that had finished most of the others. We went back to the office for a new list and there was no more – every D or independent in the Reno area not known to be a Trump supporter or have already voted volunteered yesterday. We stayed the night and will be back at headquarters this morning, but expect to be switched to ballot processing.
The ground game at least in Reno is pretty awesome! The app is very user-friendly, although we ran into a few issues that seem to be in the back-end programming, perhaps in the database interface.
I came back from dinner to see the SNL cold open. MVP Harris is fantastic and fingers crossed for Tuesday. Hopefully all our little bits add up to make her 47 and Mango Mussolini a bad problem in history.
