The Scottsdale Scorpions attempted a ninth-inning comeback behind Drew Gilbert’s heroics, but were unable to complete it in an 11-10 loss to the Peoria Javelinas. Only Drew Gilbert and Jett Williams played for the Scorpions on Wednesday.
Drew Gilbert, playing right field Wednesday, went ballistic at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs and a walk. Gilbert was able to raise his OPS to .334 in that game alone. Gilbert’s first home run was a blast to right center that traveled 430 feet. Such performances have been rare for Gilbert during his injury-riddled season, but offer optimism for the 2025 season.
Jett Williams reached base four times on Tuesday, but Wednesday didn’t offer the same success for the young shortstop. Williams went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts and a walk. Williams also had a throwing error, his second of the season. Seeing Gilbert and Williams with flashes of brilliance in the AFL is a great sign of life and hopefully can serve as a starting point for their 2025 seasons.
- RF Drew Gilbert: 3-for-4, 3 R, 2 HR (3), 4 RBI (6), BB (.778 OPS)
- SS Jett Williams: 0-for-5, BB, 4 K (.710 OPS)
On the pitching side, Saul Garcia gave up three hits, two walks and two runs per inning of work. His ERA is now 3.38 in 5 1/3 innings. Jawilme Ramirez relieved Garcia, recording two strikeouts and one hit.
- RHP Saul Garcia: 1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
- RHP Jawilme Ramirez: 2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K
