Pittsylvania County local election officials are trying to contact voters to resolve issues with their absentee ballots before Friday’s deadline.
Absentee voters in Pittsylvania County should double-check the status of their ballots as local election officials work to correct about 100 absentee ballots that were filled out incorrectly or with missing information.
Shani Shorter, Pittsylvania County’s chief clerk, said letters have been sent and her staff is making follow-up phone calls to absentee voters who need to correct something on their ballots to make sure their votes are counted. Her office number is (434) 432-7971.
“We’re contacting everyone today by phone just to let them know if anything is missing or needs to be filled in before they finish processing them towards the end of the week,” Shorter said yesterday in an interview with The Dogwood.
The deadline for receiving absentee ballots at local registry offices is this Friday at noon. Mailed ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day.
Tyler Davis and Grace Davis received a call yesterday from the Pittsylvania County Clerk’s office to say there was a problem with the addresses they listed on their absentee ballots that needed to be corrected in order for their votes to be counted.
They were able to fix the problem in person in a few minutes without any problems the same day.
“They went out and printed an affidavit,” Grace Davis said. “You sign it with your correct information and they stamp it and process it.”
Simple mistakes in absentee ballots that can prevent them from being counted are relatively common. If you have voted by post and have any reason to believe that your address may be incorrect, contact your local Chief Registrar.
