A varied vigil in honor of homeless nevadans who died in 2024 – Krnv

The Northern Nevada interconfactive leaders will gather at 5:30 pm on Monday, February 10, at Reno City Plaza to honor the 77 homeless persons from Washo County, who died in 2024. The public is invited to join check are in the “Believe” structure in Reno City Plaza.

The solemn service will include reading the names of those who have died. Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish and Bahai religious leaders will offer prayers in their relevant traditions and languages.

Father Chuck Duran, Rector at the Catholic Cathedral of St. Thomas Aquinski and co-director of vigil, said that while Washo County records show less deaths among the homeless in 2024, the last decade observed increasing mortality among Non-flushes. In 2023, 136 homeless persons were killed in Washo County, almost tripled the percentage of previous years.

“These numbers have been increasing over the years. The system seems to have been broken and cut,” said the Reverend Durant. “Our moral responsibility is to take care of people in need. All the traditions of faith agree to the dignity of human beings and the obligation to care for those who are the most in our community.”

The memorial memory of candles hosted the Commission for Life, Peace and Justice of the Diocese of Renault, the Interfactive Association in Nevada and the centers for warming good neighbors.
