Lund, Ronald E. Ronald E. Lund, a resident of Scottsdale, Arizona, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 29 at the age of 89 at his home in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Before he passed, Ron was in hospice where he had a family reunion last week filled with many special friends, shared memories, concerts, laughter, tears, prayers and love. Ron was born on December 16, 1934 in Waterloo, Iowa to John and Bertha Lund. He attended Cedar Falls High School where he met Virginia, the love of his life. Ron received a BS in chemical engineering from Iowa State University and a law degree from the University of Tennessee (earned while working in Oak Ridge, TN for the Atomic Energy Commission). Ron began his legal career in 1962 at Pillsbury, where he later became Associate General Counsel. Ron joined Medtronic in 1989, serving as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, where he led Medtronic through its most successful decade. Ron retired from Medtronic in 1999 and was rehired for an encore performance in 2004. Ron’s “retirement” later included roles as General Counsel leading both the American Red Cross and AGA Medical and mentoring the next generation of general counselors. Ron and his wife, Virginia, began attending Minnesota Orchestra concerts in 1962 and were devoted to the concerts. Ron joined the Orchestra’s Board of Directors in 1993. He served as Chairman of the Board from 2003-2005. In 2006, Ron was appointed Life Life Director for his steadfast leadership, wise counsel and generosity. Ron and Virginia were married 67 years and had 4 children, Lisa, John, Mary and Sandy. Today, his family has grown into an enthusiastic clan of 30+. He was blessed with a bonus family of Cambodian refugees whom he welcomed into his home in the early 1980s and continued to love as his own throughout his life. Ron loved his family passionately and passed on to them his strong faith, spirituality, love of family, generosity and integrity. Throughout his life he enjoyed music, sailing, golf, skiing, bridge and reading. Ron and Virginia spent the summer at their home in Bayfield, Wisconsin. They crossed Lake Superior several times in their sailboat, New Song, and took countless day trips with family and friends from Bayfield around the Apostle Islands. Ron had a lifelong dream to fly and realized that dream at 62. Since then, Ron has spent countless hours flying business and special trips with Virginia, friends and family in his Cessna Caravan 208. Ron was an avid traveler with a strong sense of adventure; he has traveled personally and professionally to dozens of countries and every continent. He especially enjoyed cruises and trips on the Virginia throughout Europe. To pass on their passion for travel and love of family, Ron and Virginia took each of their grandchildren on an individual “12-year road trip” to a destination of their choice. Voyages include a Northern Europe cruise, Switzerland, Paris, Turkey, Scandinavia, Greece and New Zealand. For their 50th wedding anniversary, the whole family traveled for 3 weeks around Scandinavia. When not traveling, Ron spent his summers in Bayfield, Wisconsin and his winters at his permanent home in Scottsdale, Arizona, always surrounded by family. Ron and Virginia often hosted events at their Eden Prairie home, including 2 weddings, Minnesota Orchestra events, several graduations, and countless family pizza parties. Ron was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, son John Lund, mother Bertha Lund, father John Lund, brother Kenneth, sister Doris and sister Dorothy. He is survived by his son-in-law William Van Sant (Marilyn), daughters Lisa Lund (Jim Kamarata), Mary McNabb (Todd) and Sandy Niederluke (Kurt), his grandchildren Emily McNabb (also Ginny), Abby McNally (Andrew), Carl Numrich (Carly), John Numrich, Patrick McNabb (Haley), Max Niederluecke (Lauren), Berit Niederluecke (Eamon), Lindsey Hicks (Trevor) and great-grandchildren Jack McToo, Clara McToo, Oscar McToo, Margot McNally, Miles McNally, Madeline Numrich and Cora Hicks, his caretaker and friend, Freda Morrell, many nieces and nephews and of course, his constant companion and furry friend (miniature schnauzer) Winnie III. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 11, at Normandale Lutheran Church, 6100 Normandale Rd, Edina, MN. Visitation will be held at 2:00 PM with a service at 3:00 PM. A reception will follow at the Minneapolis Club. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Ron’s honor to the Minnesota Orchestra.
