A man who drove 140 miles / h before Dui’s fatal disaster in Las Vegas condemned – Las Vegas Review -journal

A judge ordered a sentence of four to 12 years on Thursday for a man who admitted that he had drove 140 miles / h before crashing into another car, killing another driver and injuring his passenger.

29-year-old Charlie Hernandez pleaded guilty in November to count driving under the influence, leading to death and/or significant bodily harm to the crash in March, in which 38-year-old Luciano Chavez on Las Vegas Boulevard in the north and Walnut Road.

“The facts in this case are as outrageous as it comes, and the defendant deserves to be in prison,” said Chief Deputy Prosecutor Prosecutor Chad Lexis.

Defender Adam Vander Hayden did not answer a request for a comment on Friday.

In addition to the prison sentence, District Judge Bita Jeger ordered Hernandez to pay $ 9,900 for restitution and install a device to block his car before he could resume driving.

Hernandez’s legal basis said that prosecutors agree not to recommend a specific sentence, although he was confronted with two to 20 years in prison.

Hernandez’s family and friends in notes, he described him as a hardworking and dedicated father who is concerned.

“I humbly want leniency, for a chance for redemption,” writes his brother Johnny Hernandez. “Not only for Charlie, but also for his daughter, who deserves the opportunity to grow up, knowing his father.”

Chavez family members could not be reached for comment.

Hernandez’s Dodge Challenger went to 140 miles / h in about three seconds before hitting Hyundai, driven by Chavez, a police department said in an arrest report. Hernandez had slowed to 127 miles / h before the impact, police reported.

Hyundai was divided into two of the impact, according to the subway.

Police said Hernandez could not “remember how he went into the contender and was confused when he asked where he was driving and what time he was driving.”
