One man has died and three others have been injured following a collision in County Durham on the A692 near Leadgate early this morning (January 25).
Emergency services were called to the scene just before 6am following reports of a collision between a white BMW 3 Series estate and a silver Audi A4 estate.
One of the passengers in the Audi died on the spot. The second passenger in the Audi suffered a head injury and is currently hospitalized.
The driver and passenger of the BMW were also taken to a hospital for treatment, but the extent of their injuries was not released.
The road remained closed for several hours while forensic investigators, along with officers from Durham Roads and Armed Policing, carried out a detailed investigation.
Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision are ongoing and officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

A Durham Police spokesman said: “Sadly a man has died following a collision this morning.
“Emergency services were called to the A692 near Leadgate just before 6am today, following reports of a collision between a white BMW 3 Series estate and a silver Audi A4 estate.
“Unfortunately, one occupant of the Audi was pronounced dead at the scene. The second passenger is being treated in hospital with a head injury.
“The driver and passenger of the BMW were also taken to hospital for treatment.
“The road was closed for several hours while an investigation was carried out at the scene by forensic investigators, along with officers from Durham Roads and Armed Policing.
“Further investigations are ongoing. Officers are appealing for anyone who may have seen the vehicles prior to the crash, collision or has dashcam footage relevant to the investigation to come forward.
