Police have arrested a suspect after a woman was fatally shot late Sunday night near downtown Durham.
Braham Pugh, 30, of Durham, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Chaquila Little, 34, also of Durham, according to police.
He was being held without bond Monday at the Durham County Jail.
The shooting happened around 11:48 pm in the 900 block of Fayetteville Street. ABC11, the news gathering partner of The News & Observer, said Little was shot outside Jack’s In and Out Mart, which is across the street from the Phoenix Square Mall and just south of the Durham Expressway.
She was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.
Police declined to say whether Pugh and Little knew each other or if she was killed in the commission of another crime.
As of Oct. 12, a total of 182 people had been shot this year in Durham, 25 of them fatally, according to police statistics.
That’s down from 32 fatal shootings at the same time in each of the previous two years, the statistics show.
