A 6-year-old boy was killed and many residents were taken to the hospital with injuries after a fire at an apartment complex in New Jersey on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Both the police and the Ewing firefighter staff rushed to the site. Once there, witnesses told employees about a child trapped in the fourth floor, where the fire began. The officers evacuated the building and tried to reach the main apartment on the fourth floor, ran into strong smoke and flames.

Police reported that completely 13 employees, 1 firefighter and 3 residents were taken to hospitals for minor burns, smoke inhalation and exhaustion.

Authorities do not know what caused the fire, but said the Ewing Police Department and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating.
