Boise State University will miss a second volleyball game with an opposing team that reportedly has a transgender athlete on its roster.
The university again said little about the reasons for its decision, posting a brief two-sentence statement on its athletics website Friday.
“Boise State volleyball will not play its scheduled home game on Thursday, November 21st against San Jose State. Per Mountain West Conference policy, the conference will record the game as a loss for Boise State.”
The varsity previously lost a game on Sept. 29 at San Jose State.
The university is silent on the confiscations. But according to internal emails obtained by Idaho Education News and several other local and national news outlets, the athletics department discussed forfeiting the September game because of reports of a transgender athlete on San Jose State’s roster.
The university’s “leadership” decided to forfeit the first game, Boise State told EdNews on Oct. 18. It’s unclear what input, if any, Boise State players had in the decision. Several national groups urged Boise State to cancel the game, according to emails released by Boise State, but the university denied that lobbying played a role in its decision.
Four other universities forfeited or canceled games with San Jose State — in a series of decisions that thrust volleyball programs into a polarized national debate over transgender athletics.
