Former offensive lineman Derek Carr wins an honor no one wants – Sports Illustrated

Former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is in a situation no one would envy.

On the one hand, he just made history. Carr became the first ever signal-caller to lose to 31 NFL franchises thanks to a 23-22 heartbreaker at the hands of the Carolina Panthers. Carr holds a 74-91 regular season record as the starting quarterback.

He was originally one of 10 quarterbacks lost by 30 franchises. Now he stands alone.

Carr can make more history this year when he plays his former team on Dec. 29. Both teams are among the worst in the NFL and both have 2-7 records at this point. Still, it’s a long-awaited reunion.

While the Raiders have endured upheaval this season, playing an underwhelming offense week after week with some of the worst quarterback play in franchise history, Carr’s situation may not be so enviable. His head coach, Dennis Allen, was fired on Monday.

“Dennis has been a part of our organization for many years,” Saints owner Gail Benson told CBS Sports. “He’s highly regarded in the NFL. He was extremely loyal and professional and most importantly an excellent football coach for us. All this makes today a very difficult day for me and our organization. However, this decision is something I felt we needed. I wish nothing but the best in the future for Dennis and his family. He will always be held in the highest regard by me and everyone in our organization.

Starting with an interim head coach is no easy task, but either way the season is almost over for the Saints. They are expected to enter Top 10, potentially Top 5. They have holes almost everywhere on their roster. Some even consider Carr to be one.

The Saints’ red-hot 2-0 start is far behind them.

All that being said, the Raiders may lack the stability that Carr brings. They are quarterback wise after his departure and are currently stuck with Gardner Minshew until the draft in April.
