BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — The Boise State women’s volleyball team announced it will miss its second scheduled match against San Jose State University.
SJSU Volleyball reportedly has a trans athlete on the team. BSU joined at least five other schools in losing games against the school, but BSU athletics has not publicly confirmed why the team lost the game. IdahoEdNews.org was able to uncover internal communications that determined the loss was trans-athlete-related, although BSU has yet to publicly release the decision.
State leaders, including Governor Little and women’s sports activist Riley Gaines immediately applauded the decision via social media. BSU has announced that the women’s volleyball team will not play in its second regularly scheduled match against SJSU, set for Nov. 21. The statement again did not address the reasons, but rather stated that they would not play the game and that “In accordance with Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the game as a loss for Boise State.”
CBS2 previously reported that the University of Nevada Reno has joined the BSU and that a growing list of schools are opting out of SJSU volleyball. However, UNR is the only school so far to publicly state why it opted out. “We demand that our right to safety and fair competition on the court be respected. We refuse to participate in any match that promotes injustice against female athletes.”
