Gilbert Confused by Colorful Choices for ATP and WTA Group Names – TennisUpToDate.com

A former coach of America’s former world number one Andre Agassi, Brad Gilbert, questioned the WTA and ATP for deciding the groups in the finals based on colours. The mega events, which are the last high-class races in both the women’s and men’s calendars, are scheduled to be held in the month of November.
The women’s event, the WTA Finals, is now underway in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for the first time. It features the first eight players who are divided into two groups: orange and purple. On the other hand, the men’s event, which will also feature eight players, will be held in Turin, Italy from November 10 to 17.

Former coach of former world No. 1 Agassi, who also recently coached young American sensation Coco Gauff, in a post on his official account on social media platform X — formerly known as Twitter — where he questioned both the ATP and WTA the reason behind naming the groups for such a competition based on colors. He believed it would be better if bands were named after former great players.

“I don’t understand why the @atptour @WTA is naming the groups for the year-end championships by color,” he wrote. . Such a tank of the circumference to go colors. Honestly, don’t get it.

In the ongoing WTA Finals, the Orange Group consists of world number two Iga Svetek of Poland, one-time Grand Slam winner and third-ranked Gauff, US Open 2024 runner-up Jessica Pegula of the United States and Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic. On the other hand, Group Purple consists of world number one and three-time Grand Slam winner Belarus Aryna Sabalenka, two-time Grand Slam runner-up Jasmine Paolini of Italy, 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and Australian Open runner-up of 2024 China’s Qinwen Zheng.

I don’t understand why @atptour @WTA name the groups for the annual color championships. in saudi arabia we are switching to the purple and orange groups so it is beyond the obvious to name the groups after former great 👍 players @SharkoTenis
