Three cross country runners from Lubbock ISD qualified for the UIL state meet, including two on the girls side.
Monterey’s Sydney Smothers placed ninth in Tuesday’s Region I-5A meet in 19 minutes, 26.9 seconds to return to Round Rock. She placed 55th at state as a junior last year.
Coronado’s Zanashia Harris also earned an individual state berth. She ran 19:52.70 to finish 14th in the region. This will be Harris’ third trip to the state meet, missing just his sophomore year. She ranked 15th as a freshman and 70th last season.
In the boys race, Lubbock High’s Arturo Rodriguez finished 11th in 16:24.80. This helped the Westerners place 10th as a team. Monterrey, whose top finisher was Antonio Rodriguez in 53rd place, remained eighth in the team standings.
The Class 5A state meet will be Nov. 2 at Old Settlers Park.
Region I-3A: Brownfield duo, Roosevelt advance to state
Kate Hesse and Kanyon Cantrell will represent Brownfield at state.
Sophomore Hessen finished third in the Region I-3A meet with a 2-mile time of 12:14.30. She also qualified for state last year, placing 53rd in Round Rock.
Cantrell ran a 17:09.80 to earn an individual berth. He finished 12th. Before him, Judge Jackson placed ninth to carry Roosevelt back into the state.
The Eagles took the fourth and final team spot with 159 points. That was six points ahead of Bowie.
Jackson clocked 16:55.50. Teammates Billy Bond (21st), Blake Castillo (25th), Kobe Mireles (54th) and Jose Valdes (56th) rounded out the scoring.
Region I-1A: O’Donnell, Lazbuddie, Nazareth qualify as teams
South Plains also had several advance from the Region I-1A competition.
Eduardo Cedillo was runner-up to power O’Donnell’s boys to the final team finish. Sands’ Carlos Plata followed in third.
Lazbuddie and Nazareth finished third and fourth on the girls side to advance to state. Hope McLain of Kress placed second to qualify as an individual.
