Good morning, it’s Monday, November 4, 2024, and THIS is your daily Eye On Annapolis news, presented by Annapolis Subaru and the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.

What a beautiful weekend. And it’s going to be a wonderful week – not so much because of the weather, but because of stopping the constant emails, texts, robocalls and mailing programs for tomorrow’s election. I’m so over him! But it’s Monday and we have news for you. Well, shall we?

Maryland Health Connection’s open enrollment for low-cost health plans began Nov. 1 with coverage beginning in January 2025. Qualified residents, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, can access tax credits and services for free. All details at MarylandHealthConnection.gov

It was three-five, Annapolis took Slaughter Across the Water 2024 against Eastport, 4-3. And while Eastportoricans were a little hurt, it was all for a number of good causes, and the bipartisan effort has raised more than a million dollars for local charities since its inception 25 years ago. Despite the win in Annapolis, Eastport’s legendary post game celebration did not disappoint with live music, great vendors and of course the beer was flowing! Great job everyone!

Not much to say, but Rice stunned Navy 24-10 in a marathon game delayed by weather, with Rice quarterback E.J. Warner led a strong offensive performance. Rice entered the game 1-6 and Navy was 6-1 and it was considered an easy win. Navy takes on the University of South Florida next Saturday, then returns to Annapolis on the 16th for a noon game against Tulane! The loss dashed Navy’s hopes for a playoff berth, but they still remain in the bowl game with a 6-2 record.

Some sad news. After 28 years, Shades of the Bay will close its doors on Main Street at the end of the year, ending a long chapter in Annapolis retail. Stop by, say goodbye and pick up a pair of sunglasses or two – Linda tells me there will be great prices. And also, while trying to find the bank ATM next to the CVS on Riva Road–it’s no longer there–I can’t remember which bank, but it’s gone!

Last week in our poll we wanted to know if you think public transport should be free. The poll was silly with only 112 responses this week. 39 said yes, it should be free, 65 said no, and 8 said they didn’t know. This week, hopefully a little more exciting – we want to know where in Anne Arundel County you go for public water access! Again, the poll is on the front page of EyeOnAnnapolis.net in the upper right corner.

We hope you caught our Canines and Crosstreks on Friday with Baby Angel, a representative pug mix. Do you have room in your home and heart? If you missed the segment, listen to it!

In Saturday’s local business spotlight, we spoke with Angel Traynor of Serenity Sistas, a group of recovery homes for men, women and single women with children. Amazing organization – hear that too. And falling on my sword here – my mic was way off – not sure what happened but I’m a little hard of hearing in places but the message from Angel is clear and needs to be heard!

OK, that’s it – thank you first and foremost, and also a quick thank you to our sponsors for today’s Daily News Brief – Annapolis Subaru, SPCA of Anne Arundel County, Solar Energy Services, Hospice of the Chesapeake Fish for a Cure, and Mac Medics up in North Park!

Anne Covington, as promised, is back with her Monday Money Report. And George Young of DCMDVA Weather is also here with the only local weather report you should care about. All of this is coming soon, so stay tuned!
