LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Las Vegas local Linda Hanley emailed Channel 13 after saw something strange on the highway.
She asked me to use my detective skills to find out what the unusual structured deal was, she said it looked like a rocket or an alien spaceship.
Well, Linda, it’s not that interesting, or should I say, out of this world, but it’s something many of us pay.
Linda and her husband have a second home in the quiet setting of Eagle Valley, which is in Lincoln County about three hours north of Las Vegas, near Pioche.
On their frequent trips to the area, they kept seeing a a strange structure in various stages of construction. It sits just past Love’s Travel Stop after you turn left from I-15 onto US-93 North.
It was starting to look a little weird, like something Elon Musk would design. Then when it went away, it really did look like a rocket. Definitely unusual.
When Linda asked me what the deal was, I first contacted Clark County and was directed to the City of North Las Vegas. A spokesperson in their Economic Development and Utilities Department told me that Linda’s mystery structure is raised water tank is currently under construction near the Apex Industrial Complex.
That got me wondering what is it for, how much does it cost and who pays for it? So, I asked these questions and here’s what I learned:
- The Apex Industrial Complex is being built before there is infrastructure to support it, so taxpayers will foot the $13.5 million bill for the reservoir to fill that gap.
- North Las Vegas said the reservoir is needed to provide water for current and future Apex businesses because Southern Nevada’s water distribution will not be available there until 2028.
- The city will use existing well water to fill the reservoir.
North Las Vegas said the added storage capacity will serve construction, consumption and fire protection in the surrounding area.
