Tempe, Arizona (November 3, 2024) – A tragic series of collisions occurred early Sunday morning in the westbound lanes of Loop 202 Red Mountain near Scottsdale Road, resulting in one fatality and another seriously injured person. The accident happened around 3 am and required a quick response from the Emergency Services.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), the chain of events began when a white car rear-ended a gray Honda SUV. That collision caused the SUV to block multiple lanes of traffic on Loop 202. Shortly thereafter, a gray Audi hit the SUV, causing further chaos on the highway. In a subsequent incident, a gray Ford passenger vehicle collided with an SUV and also struck two people who were standing in front of their vehicles as a result of the previous crashes.
One person has tragically lost his life due to injuries sustained in this third collision, while another person is reported to be in a critical condition. The identities of the victims have not yet been released as authorities continue to investigate.
The Arizona Department of Transportation said the highway remains closed from Scottsdale Road to Loop 101 Pima Road, with no expected reopening time. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes to ensure their safety and allow emergency crews to manage the situation effectively.
