Woman accused of hitting Madison police squad by driving into crowd – WMTV

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A 19-year-old woman is accused of driving into a crowd of people and hitting a Madison police squad car early Sunday morning.

MPD said they pulled over a woman around 1 a.m. for driving on State Street, near Gorham Street, and was in a suspected stolen vehicle. MPD claims the driver would not exit the vehicle nor put the vehicle in park.

Officers said they spoke with the woman to try to de-escalate the situation. The woman then allegedly hit the gas and drove toward the squad, a planter and dozens of people standing on the sidewalk.

MPD noted that the driver drove through spike strips as she drove away from the area.

MPD officers described following the suspect vehicle from a distance until it eventually crashed near Highway 19 and River Road.

Police arrested the driver for allegedly failing to obey traffic signs, operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent, second-degree reckless endangerment, fleeing and resisting.
