The longtime Village Tavern, known for its cozy patio, has closed its SouthPark location after 35 years.

A note posted at its entrance says the restaurant’s lease is expiring and that the owners have decided the space “cannot accommodate our latest menus and design prototypes in the long term.”

The country tavern is a regional restaurant chain which started in Winston-Salem and opened its Charlotte location in 1989. Its website lists eight other locations, mostly in the Southeast, including Raleigh, Greensboro and two in Winston-Salem. A note on the door said the restaurant hopes to return to Charlotte — “a city we love” — as soon as it finds a “suitable location.” He also thanked employees and customers. On the Charlotte Eats Facebook group, which is dedicated to longtime Charlotte restaurants, users mourned the loss of the restaurant’s crab dip. Some said the restaurant recently reduced its hours.

Village Tavern is the second longtime SouthPark restaurant to close in the past few months. Harper’s closed in July to make way for a Chase bank branch.

After 35 successful years, we have decided to close our SouthPark location. We were at the end of our lease and despite extensive discussions with our gracious landlord, we ultimately decided that the space could not accommodate our latest menus and design prototypes in the long term.

We hope to return to Charlotte, a city we love, as soon as we can identify a suitable location and space.

We would be remiss if we did not recognize a group of individuals:

Our wonderful employees, many of whom have been with us for decades, are the best in the business and create exceptional guest experiences every day!

And to all the loyal customers who became friends and family.
