TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The countdown to Election Day is underway and candidates from both parties are making their case one last time.
The Women’s March in Topeka amplified the voices of women supporting pro-choice candidates running for Congress, the state legislature and local office on the Democratic side.
Despite the heavy rain, many people gathered on the steps of the Capitol to parade and hear from some of the candidates.
Speakers included Kansas Democratic Party Chairwoman Jeanne Ripas, House District 58 candidate Alexis Simmons, former state representative, mayor of Topeka, and Kansas Secretary of Revenue Joanne Wagnon, Kansas High School Democrats President Caroline Toland,
Ashley All, Dr. Glenda Overstreet, Candidate House District 54, Jade Pearson Ramsdell and
Former Kansas Congresswoman District 2 and Congressional candidate Nancy Boyda.
The rally was held to celebrate the progress of women and encourage everyone to get out and vote. A key point he emphasized was advocating for abortion rights.
“Very much the theme here today is to make sure that women retain rights over their bodies, that no one else can make personal decisions for them,” explained House candidate Alexis Simmons. “So many women have died since Roe v. Wade was overturned, and honoring and recognizing them and the laws we pass is very important.”
The party also hopes to overturn the supermajorities currently held by Republicans in both the House and Senate.
