LANCASTER, Pa. – The No. 19 Franklin & Marshall men’s soccer team (9-1-7, 7-1-1 CC) scored twice in the second half, including an 86th-minute game-winning goal, to defeat Washington College (8 -4-6, 4-3-2 CC), 2-1, in F&M’s regular-season finale Saturday night. Prior to the game, the F&M men’s soccer team honored eight members in a Senior Day ceremony. These members include: Jack Borden, Jack Noory, Adam Green, Isaac Mintz, Jake Rosenfeld, Nick Petruso, Levi Klein and Koa Kaliebe.
After a scoreless first half in which the Diplomats outscored the Shoremen 8-3, F&M stepped up the offensive pressure immediately after the halftime break. In the 57th minute, a loose ball in the Washington College penalty area found the foot of Kaliebe, who drilled a shot into the top right corner of the net for his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Borden, meanwhile, picked up his first assist of the season on the play.
Washington College made it 1-1 in the 69th minute with a goal that hit the right post.
F&M continued to apply offensive pressure, taking a free kick in the 86th minute in hopes of a potential game-winner. Mintz sent a long centering pass that was headed into the right side of the net Thomas Kaplan to give the Diplomats a 2-1 lead. Kaplan scored his fourth goal of the season and first game-winning goal of his career, while Mintz had his second assist of the season in the game.
Franklin & Marshall topped Washington College, 19-14, in the contest. Kaliebe led the game with six shots, while Green and Kaplan each accounted for three shot attempts in the win. Nolan Booth made three saves in net to secure the win for F&M.
With his 75th career start, Mintz became the all-time leader in games started in F&M men’s soccer history.
No. 19 Franklin & Marshall earned a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament and prepares to host a semifinal game Friday. The opponent and kick-off time have yet to be determined.
