After a masterful performance against LSU that saw him haul in two passes for 70 yards and a trio of touchdowns on the ground, Marcell Reed has reclaimed his QB1 role.
Connor Weigman hasn’t been bad since returning to the starting job, but he hasn’t been phenomenal or anything either, throwing for one touchdown and two interceptions in the two and a half games he’s played for the Aggies recently.
After Weigman completed just six of his 18 pass attempts against the LSU Tigers on Saturday night, Mike Elko realized the passing game wasn’t working and he needed the mobile ability that Marcell Reed could provide.
And boy, did he ever deliver.
Immediately, Reed took a punt eight yards into the end zone, starting a streak of five straight that saw Reed run for two more touchdowns, LeVeon Moss hit his second score of the night, and Randy Bond floated a 26-yard field goal through the uprights in the second 31-point half that sealed the victory for the Aggies’ comeback after trailing 17-7 at halftime.
The win gave the Aggies first place in the SEC standings as the only undefeated team in the conference.
Reid and the Aggies will try to avoid what happened the last time they traveled to Columbia, which was a 30-24 loss to the Gamecocks in 2022, but unlike this game, the Aggies won’t be struggling with as much injuries, and the Aggies have been virtually unstoppable on the road with Mike Elko at the helm.
The Aggies and Gamecocks kick off tonight at 6:30 pm from Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia.
