VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Beach educators and public safety officers took over the Kellam High School football field Saturday in a highlight-reel football game for charity.

The second annual Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Turkey Cup featured Virginia Beach City Public Schools teachers and administrators on one team and Virginia Beach Sheriff’s deputies, police, firefighters and EMS on the other.

Admission to the game costs $5, with all proceeds going to the Virginia Beach Education Association’s beach bag programs, which provide students with bags of food to take home at the end of the day so they don’t go home hungry.

Sheriff Rocky Holcomb, the main sponsor of the game, says it’s a fun game that has been known to get awkward at times.

“It’s a great connection to schools, public safety and the community. It’s funny because a lot of the teachers there, my public safety guys were their students back in the day and now they’re playing against them in a soccer game to raise money for beach bags, so it’s just a great opportunity for the community to come together,” said he to News 3.

News 3 anchor Blaine Stewart and sports director Mark Davis served as volunteer referees for the game. Operations Manager Kevin Rafferty announced the game.

The public safety team struck first in the first of two 25-minute halves, but the teachers were quick to respond.

In the end, the teachers got revenge for their loss from last year, taking it by a final score of 47-28.
