Emergency services were called to Claypath, in the city centre, on Sunday (October 20) following reports of a row just after 3am.
One man was left with head injuries following the incident and was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment.
A cordon was erected across Claypath after the ordeal, with pictures from the scene on Sunday morning showing several police cars along the road.
Durham Police have now confirmed that two men have been arrested in connection with the incident and are in custody. They have since been released on bail.
The condition of the man, who has head injuries, is not yet known.
A spokeswoman for the force said: “We were called to reports of an altercation in Claypath, Durham City, shortly after 3am on Sunday, October 20.

“One person suffered head injuries and was taken to the RVI in Newcastle for treatment.
“Two men were arrested in connection with the incident and detained. Both have been bailed pending investigations.
