These Delaware towns ranked as some of the best small towns in the U.S., report says – The News Journal

Each small town comes with its own unique charm and sense of community.

While these are important factors in deciding where to call home, the livability of any small town is also a big component, including the cost of living, the quality of education and health care, the local economy, and more.

A recent report from WalletHub ranked the best small towns in the United States in 2024, and three places familiar to Delawareans made the list.

America’s Best Small Towns

WalletHub compared more than 1,300 U.S. cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 based on “45 key livability indicators.” The indicators are grouped into the following categories with values ​​based on data from the US Census Bureau and other sources:

The 45 indicators in the six categories are weighted separately on a 100-point scale, with 100 being the most favorable conditions for small-town residents. The weighted averages of all indicators determine the overall score of each city and their placement in the final ranking.

Of the three Delaware cities represented, Newark was the only one to rank in the top 50 percentile. Newark received an overall score of 58.99, ranking #1003 for affordability, #1152 for economic health, #648 for education and health care, #34 for quality of life and #1045 for safety. The city is in the 58th percentile.

In the bottom 50th percentile are Wilmington and Dover.

Wilmington is in the 41st percentile and receives an overall score of 56.72. The city ranked No. 1115 for affordability, No. 994 for economic health, No. 751 for education and health care, No. 15 for quality of life, and No. 1293 for safety.

Dover is in the 13th percentile and receives an overall score of 51.01. The city ranked No. 992 for affordability, No. 1237 for economic health, No. 998 for education and health care, No. 128 for quality of life, and No. 1270 for safety.
