Each week we will review and offer a prediction for every Northern 5A football game. Here’s our week 12 review.
5A-II
No. 5 Reno at No. 4 Douglas: Reno travels to Minden for a regional quarterfinal game. Reno is coming off a win over McQueen that decided which team would be moved up to Division 5A-III next season. In the regular season game, Douglas defeated Reno 20-13. WR Brenton Weston was not heavily featured in this game, but has played a bigger role for the Tigers in recent weeks and has 45 catches for 818 yards and 11 touchdowns. Weston and Zachary Jackson combined for most of the team’s points with Evan Youmans a strong two-way player. Reno quarterback Braylon Wilson was a big factor in the Huskies’ success Friday against McQueen. If Reno is able to start the game, it will create a bigger problem for Douglas’ defense. Forecast: Douglas 24, Reno 21
#6 McQueen at #3 Spanish Springs: Spanish Springs missed a first-round bye, losing to Reed in overtime, 31-28 last week, setting up that regional quarterfinal matchup against McQueen. The winner moves on to play Reed next week. In their last meeting, Spanish Springs dominated McQueen with junior Cooper Milligan rushing for three touchdowns in a 33-13 win, and that game was just two weeks ago, so McQueen should be resting much better. The Lancers are coming off a 35-28 loss at Reno and have been outscored by 116 points while going 0-5 in league play. Forecast: Spanish Springs 42, McQueen 24
5A-III
#6 Hug #3 Carson: Carson hosts Hug in a quarterfinal game, with the winner moving on to play Damonte Ranch, which earned a bye with a win over the Senators last week. Carson was in solid position to claim a first-round bye, but fell short offensively against the Mustangs in a 16-14 loss that was the Senators’ second-lowest showing of the season against a Nevada team. The score shouldn’t be an issue for Carson this week, as it beat Hug 37-0 earlier this season, and the Hawks have been outscored 392-24 in 2024. Forecast: Carson 42, hug 6
No. 5 Wooster at No. 4 North Valleys: Wooster enters the quarterfinal game with two wins under its belt. The last win came against Hug, 22-6. The Colts return to North Valleys after a 42-14 loss to the Panthers earlier in the season. In that game, the Panthers’ Hayden Lewis rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Mikol Almond has completed more than 85 percent of his pass attempts in the past two games. The winner moves on to play top-seeded Galena in the semifinals on Nov. 8.Forecast: North Valleys 42, Wooster 6
