GLENDALE — As the leaves change in Glendale, so does the landscape in some neighborhoods.
Abraham has lived on Green Tree Road since 1987 and says it’s a neighborhood where a lot of people walk, especially with the synagogue down the road.
“There are many children around, especially people who go to the temple. I think it’s a great idea,” Abraham said.
That’s one reason Carl Warwick, Glendale’s city administrator, said new sidewalks are being installed.
“The city has a large Jewish population, a large part of which is Orthodox, and they cannot drive during certain hours. We have identified areas where the Jewish population can now get off the street and onto the sidewalk so they can escape in a dangerous situation,” Karl said.
The city is using funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to build new sidewalks in the area to make it safer for pedestrians on busy roads. These areas include Good Hope Road from Green Bay Avenue to the Parkway and Port Washington Road west of Sugar Lane to Good Hope Road.
“We did this as a way to try to bridge some of the gaps that have been in the city’s pedestrian system so that people can better get from one place to another,” Carl said.
Along with the sidewalks, the project also includes new bike lanes. Increasing the number of cycling opportunities in the city was originally part of Glendale’s 2020 Bike and Pedestrian Plan.
“Many people feel that bicycle and pedestrian improvements are necessary for safety and as a way to explore new recreational activities. As a result of feedback from residents, the city initiated this project,” said Carl.

With connecting bike lanes and new sidewalks, Carl said the city is working to make Glendale a more pedestrian-friendly area.
“I hope a lot of people will use them to get from one place to another, use them for recreational activities and enhance their feelings about the city of Glendale,” Carl said.
Abraham says the ongoing construction may be a bit of an inconvenience now, but it’s worth it to improve safety.
“For a long time, it’s wonderful,” Abraham said.
