In a solid performance, the Cleveland Cavaliers secured a 120-109 victory over the Orlando Magic on Friday night, remaining undefeated at 6-0 and marking their best start since 2016. Darius Garland led the way with 25 points, while Donovan Mitchell contributed 22 points as the Cavs showcased their offensive prowess under first-year coach Kenny Atkinson.
The game served as a rematch of last season’s intense playoff run, which the Cavaliers won in seven games. However, the Magic were without All-Star forward Paolo Banchero, who is expected to be out for at least a month with a torn right oblique. Banchero was a key player for Orlando, averaging 29 points, 8.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists before his injury.
Despite Banchero’s absence, Orlando’s Jalen Suggs stepped up, scoring a career-high 28 points to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists. Franz Wagner added 17 points, but the Magic struggled to find their rhythm without their star player.
A critical moment came late in the third quarter when Cleveland’s reserves — Caris LeVert, Sam Merrill and Georges Niang — hit a series of 3-pointers to extend the Cavs’ lead to 17 points heading into the final frame. It showed the Cavaliers’ ability to play at a faster pace and effectively utilize their three-point shooting, a hallmark of Atkinson’s system.
Cleveland’s strong start not only highlights their offensive prowess, but also their overall team cohesion. They improved to an impressive 30-7 in Donovan Mitchell’s last 37 regular-season games since January, cementing his status as a key player for the team. The Cavaliers’ combination of veteran leadership and youthful energy suggests they could be a formidable force in the Eastern Conference as the season progresses.
