Sioux Falls, SD – Residents of Sioux Falls and surrounding areas should prepare for a wet and stormy Sunday, with a 90 percent chance of thunderstorms and total rainfall reaching a quarter of an inch by evening. A high chance of precipitation continues into Monday, potentially impacting travel, especially along I-29, as water accumulates on roadways and local flooding risks increase.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the chance for storms increases after 10 a.m. Sunday, with peak intensity expected in the late afternoon. The rain is forecast to continue intermittently through Monday night, with light rain or rain showers through Monday morning. Northwest Iowa, in particular, is expected to receive the heaviest precipitation, with an 80% to 90% chance of at least 0.25 inches of rain over the next 24 hours.

Sunday’s high is expected to reach around 59°F with gusty southeast winds up to 20 mph. The storm system may result in reduced visibility on highways and slick conditions, so drivers are advised to use caution. By Monday, temperatures will drop slightly to 54°F as clouds linger and rain chances continue through midday.

Looking ahead, the weather is expected to clear by Tuesday, bringing sunny skies and high temperatures in the 50s. Tuesday night and Wednesday should see mostly clear skies with lows in the 30s and highs near 53°F, marking a return to more stable conditions.

Local officials are advising Sioux Falls residents to secure outdoor items and monitor weather alerts as the storm progresses. Travelers should consider postponing travel until conditions improve. For real-time updates, check local weather forecasts and be alert for any flood warnings that may be issued.
