LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The North Las Vegas Police Department told 8 News Now that the investigation into the death of a 17-year-old remains active, disputing claims made Thursday by the victim’s family.
Along with their attorneys and a civil rights group, the family of Se’mauri Norris-Johnson held a press conference Thursday asking Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson to open a new investigation into their son’s murder.
Norris-Johnson was shot at the intersection of Shadow Oak and Spotted Pony roads around 9:45 p.m. on Oct. 31, 2023, according to the North Las Vegas Police Department.
“The case is currently open and active and no additional information can be released at this time,” the North Las Vegas Police Department said Friday.
“They deserve answers as to what happened here and why this 16-year-old is not being prosecuted for the murder,” Shane Harris, president of the People’s Association of Defenders of Justice, said at the news conference Thursday.
According to the NLVPD, a 16-year-old was arrested Jan. 26 for minor in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a weapon in an occupied vehicle. The teenager was booked into the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center.
Norris-Johnson was a football player at Desert Pines High School, and his death left a gaping hole.
“Se’Mauri’s name will not be another file in the drawer of North Las Vegas,” Maureisha Johnson, his mother, said Thursday.
Surveillance video 8 News Now obtained from a neighbor shows Norris-Johnson running from a vehicle before shots were fired.
The family is represented by attorneys Leonard Stone and John Jimenez of Shook & Stone Injury Lawyers.
“Because the shooter was a minor, much of this information is currently private, confidential and protected,” Stone said.
According to the NLVPD, he and a group of teenagers were wearing ski masks when they ran into two crooks, including the 16-year-old shooter.
The NLVPD is urging anyone with information about this crime to contact its detectives by phone at 702-633-9111. To remain anonymous, tipsters can contact Crime Stoppers of Nevada at 702-385-5555 or online at crimestoppersofnv.com.
