Dukes fall in home regular season finale to Georgia State – James Madison University Athletics

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison men’s soccer fell in its regular season finale at home Friday night, 1-0, to Georgia State at Sentara Park.

The Dukes fell to 7-3-6 overall and 3-2-3 in Sun Belt Conference games as their 11-game home unbeaten streak was snapped. The Panthers snapped their eight-game winless streak and improved to 4-7-5, 1-4-3 SBC.

Redshirt senior Evan Southern pace JMU’s four-shot offense, while the junior Sebastian Conlon made one goal save.

I’m quoting the head coach Paul Zazenski

“Tonight was a sensitive one as we would have loved to get a result on senior night. This loss is for me.”

How it happened

  • JMU had its first scoring opportunity in the ninth minute when Southern’s shot was saved.
  • Georgia State scored when Tom Williams took a shot that Conlon saved and Williams followed with a chip into an open net. A JMU defender swooped in and deflected it, but the ball bounced off the post and back into the goal.
  • Southern had another chance in the 75thth minute with a break from the side of the box, but a Georgia State save denied the shot.

Fast facts

  • The Dukes outshot the Panthers 12-5, making seven of their shots on goal.
  • JMU had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
