Latino community organization celebrates Day of the Dead in Madison – WMTV

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – November 1st is Day of the Dead, a holiday celebrated mainly in Mexico and Latin American countries. The Latin American Organization for Understanding and Development (LOUD) celebrated with an altar and art exhibit in Madison on Friday at Common Wealth Gallery.

The event connects Latin American artists, organizations and the community to celebrate the welcoming of the souls of deceased relatives.

The exhibit features artwork from nearly a dozen artists from Dane County and southeastern Wisconsin. “Each artist creates artwork based on their interpretation of the Day of the Dead,” said LOUD founder and director Oscar Mireles.

In the various works of art, Mireles noted one common theme: Love.

“You’ll see a lot of love that went into some of these paintings, whether it’s family members, neighbors or a loved one,” he said.

Artist Richard Lopez appreciates the exhibition because it allows him to connect with other artists. “We had so many similarities in the way we think and how we choose to decorate space and mark certain moments in time,” he said, referring to his relationship with artist Rodrigo Carapia.
