MADISON (WKOW) — A judge has sentenced a Mazomanie man who police say left two young cats in a parking lot. One of them died.
Court records show Lucas Smith, 33, pleaded guilty in March to repeated, intentional cruelty to animals, a felony. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors dropped a felony charge on bail.
In court Wednesday, a judge sentenced Smith to 10 days in jail and must pay court costs.
Police previously told 27 News they saw Smith on business surveillance footage drop off the two cats in November at 2023 Rethke Ave. near Commercial Ave. on the east side of Madison. The video shows him hitting one of the cats before driving off.
Smith contacted police after seeing his own image on the local news when police were looking for him. He was taken into custody during a traffic stop.
