A suspected drink driver has been arrested after a car plowed into a shop in County Durham, leaving two people in hospital.
Police and paramedics were called to North Road East, in Wingate, on Friday (November 1) after a car plowed into the front of the Wingate – Go Local Extra minimarket.
A photo from the scene shows a car left on its side in the middle of the street, which is blocked by two police cars.
The front of the store was also left visibly damaged.
Durham Police have now confirmed that a woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink-driving after failing a roadside breath test.
Meanwhile, two passengers who were in the car were taken to University Hospital of North Durham by the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) for treatment with unknown injuries.
A full police statement said: “We were called just after 9.10am today to an incident where a car had collided with a shop on North Road, Wingate.
“A woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving after failing a roadside breath test.

“Paramedics also arrived and took two passengers who were in the car to hospital for treatment.
A NEAS spokesman said: “We were called to a road traffic collision today (November 1) on Westgate Road West in Wingate shortly after 9am.
“We dispatched an ambulance crew and an on-call officer. Two patients were taken to University Hospital North Durham.”
